I find it harder to dress up during this time a year, because all I think about when it’s 2 degrees outside, is ways to stay warm. And that big fluffy knitted sweater your auntie made you a couple years ago might be very practical but just not so fashionable. So I always make sure to stack up on the following pieces every winter season which are helpful for layering up my clothes also.
One – Hoodie – What I love most about hoodies is that it’s a casual & comfortable piece, but still adds a little bit more personality to your fit compared to a plain sweater for example. For the past couple seasons it’s been a wardrobe staple and has even been seen on the runways, while years back this item used to be worn more by skater boys. Thank God for this trend cross over cause streetwear has never been so effortless, fashionable and most importantly practical for this winter season.
Two – Scarf – I believe the scarf has been a winter wardrobe staple for ages! Your girl is not a big fan of rocking scarfs but with it being so cold right now, I wasn’t left a choice. Besides with the likes of Off White, Acne and Balenciaga designing winter scarfs I’m literally gagging over, I didn’t mind stacking up on a bunch this go around.
Three – Beret – Like scarfs you won’t find me in a hat easily. But beret’s got me hooked. I’d preferably wear something on my head that is a fashion statement over it’s practicality. As a black woman I spend an awful lot of time doing my hair. So I wouldn’t want to deal with anything that purposely messes up my hair, if I decide to wear something on my head let it be worn throughout the day then. Baret’s have been out of the ”mainstream” style for a while however some time last year they quietly made a splashing comeback.
Four – Turtleneck – I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, the turtleneck sweater is a winter wardrobe’s MVP. Why you ask? Well it speaks for itself. The great thing about turtlenecks is that they are a wear any time, any where item. It just depends on what you wear it with, and how you style it of course. But it’s versatality and practicality is one of the reasons we love it so much.
Five – Puffer jacket – I can already hear some of you guys think it; ”if you say puffer jacket one more time…”. Hello! Don’t you dare deny it, this is the most lit winter/fall trend ever. I remember puffer jackets started to hit the high street scene somewhere around fall 2016. Around that time they were impossible to find, before you knew it, it was sold out everywhere. Now as soon as you walk into a Monki, Weekday or Zara it’s hard to miss them. I’m pretty sure there will be another winter trend we’ll be obsessing over soon enough, but for now I’ll enjoy every single puffer jacket I got hanging in my closet.
